Yes! Research shows that teaching social and emotional skills like
kindness improves behavior and academic success. We believe it does even more than that... we believe kindness creates conditions which
lead to a caring environment for students, teachers and community
members. Everyone benefits when individuals, schools, and communities embrace kindness.

Spreading Kindness and Honoring Our Veterans
On Wednesday, November 11th, our class distributed thank you notes to any person who makes a positive contribution at Addams Elementary. After writing personal notes to custodians, secretaries, lunch monitors, teachers and the principal, the students hand delivered their letters to these special individuals. In addition, the staff also enjoyed some yummy treats. The feedback from the recipients of these notes was so positive and heartwarming.
We also decided to create thank you cards for our veterans. These were sent to the Veterans Hospital located in Detroit. The students really did a great job of expressing their appreciation to these men and women who risk their lives to keep our country safe.
Last, but not least, students enjoyed writing and receiving compliments from fellow classmates in honor of World Kindness Day! It’s amazing how a few kind words can make someone’s day!

Judson Center Needs Our Help!
In an effort to Pay it Forward, our class along with Mrs. Berger's class, will be collecting supplies each month for the Judson Center. Judson Center’s mission is to provide expert, comprehensive services in southeastern Michigan that strengthen children, adults and families impacted by abuse and neglect, autism, developmental disabilities and mental health challenges so they are successful in their communities.
While many of us donate during the holidays, which is wonderful, the Judson Center is open year round and continuously needs to be replenished. Each month, we will designate the type of supplies we will be collecting. Both of our classes will have a collection basket in each of our rooms. Once again, thank you for your generosity. For the month of March we will be collecting canned goods.

Let's Start a Chain Reaction!
It all started on one of those lazy summer days, when I was watching Ellen and was inspired by one of her guests, a teacher of course! She had taken Ellen’s simple motto (which I love), “Be Kind to One Another” to the next level by implementing Pay it Forward Wednesdays. So all of this got me thinking…what if our class focused on paying it forward? Students would learn firsthand how random acts of kindness can have a major positive impact on people. They would also see that it doesn’t take much to pay it forward, like telling someone they did a good job, or moving a neighbor’s newspaper out of the rain, or maybe even a fist bump for a job well done. It all sounds so simple, but often people don’t realize how a small positive remark or simple action can make a difference. It truly is amazing how one random act of kindness can start a chain reaction!
Please take a few minutes to watch the videos and then pass them along! Thanks, Donna |
Check Out Our Visible Thinking!
Chalk Talk
The Chalk Talk thinking routine provides an opportunity for everyone to be given a chance to be heard. Thinking becomes visible and it encourages students to consider others' viewpoints. It is a silent discussion on paper that invites all students to be active members of the learning process.
Students responded to the following prompts using this routine:
What’s Your Mindset?
We have been exploring different types of mindsets and how they impact learning. In the beginning of the year, students participated in a chalk talk (see below) to get them thinking about the differences between a growth and fixed mindset. Be sure to ask your child what type of mindset they have, and what makes them say that?

Terrific Teamwork!
We are so fortunate that students in our class can earn team points when the entire class displays awesome OAKS behavior and/or receives a compliment from someone at Addams. Once our jar is filled, our class earns the privilege of working on a special
project with Mrs. Bright, a former Royal Oak teacher and dear friend of mine. Not only does she donate her time, she also donates all of the supplies!

Pen Pals at Northwood
I’m pleased to announce we will have pen pals this year from Northwood! We already received our first letter and wrote back! This is a wonderful opportunity to practice our letter writing skills as well as develop new friendships.

Reading Warm-Ups
Students will be using a different type of warm-up for the next several weeks. With this warm-up students will complete a self-evaluation form. Why self-assess? Student self-assessment is one of the greatest tools for growth. When students know what they know and don’t know, they begin to become more aware of strengths and weaknesses, making it possible to zero in on challenging areas. This also helps to guide my instruction.

I am sure that you will agree that reading is very important EVERY month! Since March is National Reading Month, Addams has many special activities planned that promote reading as a fun and enjoyable experience. In addition to the school-wide activities, the students will be participating in several other reading activities in our classroom.
One Minute Read – Students need to find a passage from their favorite book and read it with expression to the class. This passage should be approximately one minute in length and should leave the audience wanting more…in other words don’t tell us how the story ends. This provides an opportunity to hear and possibly spark an interest in a new genre. Hopefully, after listening to a performance a student may decide to read the book. Students should be prepared to share their one-minute read beginning March 4th.
Book Swap
On Friday, March 6th, I would like to have a class book swap. Here is how it works…
Students can bring in 1-3 books that they would like to trade. However many books a student brings in is how many books they can choose from the swap pile.
In addition, Song and Spirit is looking for gently used books. If you have any books lying around collecting dust, please consider donating them. Thanks!
The idea is to get some new reading material without having to pay anything. Of course, the book swap is optional.
Read-In
On Tuesday, March 31st, students are invited to bring a pillow, blanket and flashlight so they can snuggle up with their favorite reading material! Students should have two-three reading choices, because we are going to READ, READ, READ!
Birthday Book Bash
I am super excited to see the creative presentations on March 12th and 13th! You, too, will be able to take a peek at the displays at Open House on March 26th.
Guest Readers Wanted – I thought it might be fun to have some parents or grandparents come in and read to our class. If you can’t find something you would like to read, not to worry, I will find you something! Due to our schedule, the best time for this to take place is from approximately 3:00 3:15 am Monday-Friday (March 9th-13th). If you need more time, we can be flexible. If you are interested in being a guest reader, please complete the attached slip and return to me by March 6th. If you would like to surprise your child, please email me at: [email protected].

Birthday Book Bash
In honor of March is Reading Month, we will be having a Birthday Book Bash! For this assignment, you will choose a fiction or non-fiction book to read with an interesting main character. Upon completion of the book, you will plan a birthday party for the main character. Think about what your main character enjoys and plan a party that includes these interests.
The birthday party tasks will be displayed on a tri-fold board. Be sure to include the title and author of your book. All items should be proofread, typed and mounted on colored paper. Please let me know if you don’t have access to a computer or printer so we can make alternative arrangements. Each party task should be labeled with a title. Examples: Invitation, Guest List, etc. If you would like, you can wrap your tri- fold in wrapping paper and add bows, ribbons, etc. to make it look festive. Your grade will reflect content and creativity! I am so excited to see what you create! Have fun!

Donalyn Miller, author of The Book Whisper, and creator of a variation of The Great Book Challenge, shares these beliefs about reading:
*Strong readers have lots of reading experiences. You need to be a good all-around reader. Encouraging students to read widely—sampling books from every genre—improves their reading ability by expanding their reading experiences. If you spend every day working on your jump shot, you’ll improve your jump shot. To be a strong all-around player, you must practice passing, guarding, and dribbling, too. To be a strong reader, you must practice reading poetry, fiction, nonfiction, wordless books, graphic novels, blog posts—a little bit of everything.
*There’s the right book for you out there somewhere. Let’s find it. For many students, trying a lot of books helps them find the one type of text that excites them and invites them into reading. Students who haven’t read much may not have found the books that speak to them. Reading buffet-style—tasting

Class Read Aloud
Our class is reading one of my favorite books, Wonder, by R.J. Palacio. If you haven’t read this book, I highly recommend it!
This is an incredible story about August "Auggie" Pullman, a young boy born with a facial difference who has been in and out of hospitals for years. With the help of his mother and his father, he tries to fit in at a new school and show everyone that he is just an ordinary kid, no different than the rest of the world. He strives to teach others that beauty is not just on the outside. The book has so many powerful messages intertwined within this funny and heartwarming story.
Throughout the book we will be:

- stepping inside and outside the story to build theories about the characters
- paying attention to: actions, choices, treatment, and surprising behavior of the main character to grow theories
- using characters struggles, recurring themes and details to grow more complex theories
- comparing characters to grow deeper theories
Reading Warm-Ups
Each week the students will be required to complete a packet of reading warm-up activities. Students will read a short passage and answer a variety of comprehension questions. These questions encourage students to summarize, visualize, recognize text structure, and learn new vocabulary. The goal of these activities is to improve students’ reading and comprehension skills.
It is important that students go back and reread to find proof for their answers. Using a highlighter is a good strategy to show your proof. If the answer is “beyond text” (in other words the answer can’t be highlighted), students should indicate this on their paper with BT. Students also are encouraged to use process of elimination.

While I don’t officially assign math homework over the weekend, I strongly encourage that your child use Khan Academy to strengthen their math skills. This program is individualized based on your child’s NWEA scores. I have updated the scores so your child will be working on skills based on their winter NWEA score.
In addition, if your child hasn’t mastered their math facts, please have your child practice them routinely.

As I stated in the beginning of the year at Curriculum Night, the 5th grade math curriculum can be challenging. It would be very beneficial to pay close attention in class and ask questions for clarification when necessary. In addition, there are many students who have not mastered their math facts which makes understanding more complex problems even more difficult.
If your child has not mastered their math facts, PLEASE have them practice them each night for a minimum of ten minutes. Once the facts are mastered, this will allow your child to concentrate on the more complicated concepts and will also help build their confidence.

Math Fact Fluency
Why should students memorize the math facts?
There have been many studies on the effects of memorizing the math facts on student performance. The bottom line is that students that memorize the math facts do better in math than students that don't. Why? We can't be sure, but the prevailing theory is that
memorizing the math facts frees up the part of the brain that students use for logical thinking, thus allowing them to focus on the problem at hand. Memorizing the math facts has also been shown to boost a student's confidence and reduce their fears and anxiety about math.
What is automaticity?
Automaticity is the point at which something is automatic. When referring to memorization of the math facts, automaticity means that the student can recall a math fact without having to think about it. Memorization is not complete until the student attains automatic recall of all
the math facts.
Isn't memorizing "rote" learning? I heard that was bad.
Rote learning has gained a bad reputation because it has been overused. However, there are a few places where rote learning is not only proper, but is essential! Just like memorizing the sounds that letters and letter combinations make is essential to reading fluency, memorizing the math facts is essential to math fluency. With all the studies that show the positive effects that memorizing the math facts has on students, there really should be no doubt
that memorizing the math facts is an important part of learning math.

This is a developmental spelling, phonics, and vocabulary program. An assessment was given to determine where to begin instruction for each student. Based on those assessment results students are given words to study in order to discover the common attributes. Students are actively constructing their own knowledge of spelling patterns.

Why Teach Greek and Latin Roots?
“Almost 70% of the English language is derived from Latin and Greek. When students learn these “building blocks,” it becomes easy for them to recognize and decode unfamiliar words that are related to a known root. It is also increasingly important to explicitly teach students the meaning of Greek and Latin words as they encounter the very technical vocabulary found in science and in other content areas.”

Holiday Happenings!
Moonbeans for Sweet Dreams
Pediatric patients eagerly shine flashlights from the hospital windows and look for community members standing outside the hospital to flash them back. So proud to say for the second year in a row, our class gathered outside the pediatric unit at Beaumont Hospital to show our support to the children in the hospital. What a sweet way to show someone you care! Thanks Mrs. O’Dell for organizing this event for us!

Smiles Everywhere at The Village of Royal Oak
What an incredible day! It was all about spreading holiday cheer and paying it forward. Our class visited The Village of Royal Oak and enjoyed interviewing the seniors, telling jokes, playing BIngo and singing holiday songs. Of course no party is complete without refreshments, so we all enjoyed a special treat together! I couldn't be more proud of my 5th graders. This is what the holidays are all about...spreading joy to others! Thank you, Mrs. O’Dell, for organizing!

Samantha, a former student, moved there this summer and her new teacher reached out and asked if we wanted to be pen pals, and of course I said YES! Our class has already written their fist letter and is anxiously awaiting a response. What a great way to learn about another state and develop strong letter writing skills.
